Abstract: Nitrifying bacteria, which are responsible for oxidation of ammonia to nitrate , play an essential role in biofilter of recirculating aquaculture system (RAS).To accelerate the start-up of moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) in RAS, bioaugmentation was adopted with the addition of mixed nitrifying bacteria .As a result, the inoculated MBBR was success -fully started after 15 days and the NH4 +-N concentrations of effluents maintained below 1 mg/L.Then at volumetric total ammonia nitrogen(TAN) load rates of 100 g TAN/(L media-d), TAN and nitrite nitrogen concentrations in effluents of MBBR maintained below 0.5 and 0.1 mg/L, respectively. At C/N ratios raging from 0 to 1, the MBBR showed stable and efficient daily performances for RAS .In lab-scale RAS experiment, the MBBR in Carassius auratus RAS was started up within 20 days and the NH4+-N and NO2--N concentrations of effluents were below 0.5 and 0.05 mg/L, respectively.
