Abstract: 4-Chlorobutyric acid methyl ester ( 2 ) was prepared by ring-opening chlorination, alcohol reaction, using 1,4-butyrolactone as the starting material. 4-( N-ethyl-3-methylanilino) butanoic acid methyl ester in total yield of 75 . 3% with purity of 97 . 5% was synthesized by nucleophilic substitution of 2 with N-ethyl-m-toluidine. The structure was confirmed by 1 H NMR.
