Abstract: Diatom from 23 surface sediment samples of the Fangchenggang Bay in Guangxi,South China were studied.170 species belonging to 50 genera were identified and Thalassionema nitzschioides had the highest abundance.A unimodal method of correspondence analysis was carried on and indicated that the diatom distribution is mainly effected by sea-surface salinity.Cyclotella striata,C.stylorum,T.nitzschioides and T.frauenfeldii could be used as index for the high sea-surface salinity,Cocconeis disculus was always found in the brackish areas where freshwater meets the open sea water and Achnanthes levanderi,Navicula minimaand N.minuscula were good indicators for the low sea-surface salinity.
