Effect of Traction Current Transmission Among Power Sections on Rail Potential in DC Mass Transit System

Abstract: A high rail potential has been observed during operation of the DC mass transit systems,while many simulation results of the rail potential are generally much smaller than the actual value. The traction current transmission among power sections when multiple trains run in multiple sections and its effect on the rail potential have been analyzed in this paper. The fieldtest results of the Guangzhou Metro Line 8 show that the rail potential is higher when a larger proportion of the current transmission appears. A dynamic analysis modelfor the rail potential when multiple trains running in multiple power sections isproposed in this paper. The phenomenon of the current transmission during trains ’ running is simulated by the dynamic analysis model,and rail potential changing under differentproportions of the current transmission is analyzed. The results of the fieldtests and the simulations show that the rail potential can be greatly reduced by preventing the cross-transmission of the traction current.
