Design of Large-Sized Space Plasma Simulation System for Low Earth Orbit Environment

Abstract: Here,we addressedthe design,construction and application of China’s world-class,large-sized space plasma simulation system(SPSS) for low earth orbit environment.The discussions focused on:ⅰ) the realistic situation of space plasma in low earth orbit environment,including but not limited to the pressure,temperature,behavior and stability and homogeneity of space plasma;ⅱ) modeling,design and construction of the SPSS vacuum system with a series of control units;ⅲ) design of plasma generation sources;ⅳ) generation and configuration of electric/magnetic fields;and(ⅴ) design and fabrication of solar simulator.Since the China’s SPSS is capable of simulating the realistic environment in F2-layer ionosphere,characteristic of low density low temperature plasma,electric/magnetic fields and solar irradiation,the satellite-borne space environment detection payloads and sensors can be tested,evaluated and characterized.In addition,cross-coupling of low density cold plasma with electric/magnetic fields and/or guided ion beam can also be experimentallv investigated.
