Effects of Chloride Ion on Surface Appearance of Co-Cr Alloy

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Objective To investigate the surface roughness of Co-Cr alloy fabricated by laser rapid forming(LRF)and formed by casting method after soaking in sterile artificial saliva with different concentrations of NaCl,and to compare the corrosion resistance of the two alloys.Meth-ods Twenty-four LRF alloy samples and 24 casting alloy samples were immersed in sterile artifi-cial saliva with different concentrations of NaCl(0.9%,2.0%,3.0%)after grinding and polis-hing.The surface roughness(Ra value)was measured after immersion for 8 weeks,and then the surface morphology was observed by field emission scanning electron microscope(FESEM).Re-sults The Ra values of both LRF alloy and casting alloy significantly increased after immersion in artificial saliva with 2%and 3% NaCl(P <0.05).Compared with casting alloy,Ra value of LRF alloy significantly increased after immersion in artificial saliva with 2% and 3% NaCl(P <0.05). No significant difference in Ra value was found between the two alloys after immersion in artifi-cial saliva with 0.9% NaCl(P >0.05).Compared with artificial saliva with 0.9% or 2.0% NaCl, Ra values of both LRF alloy and casting alloy significantly increased after immersion in artificial saliva with 3% NaCl(P < 0.05).In addition,the surface morphology observed by FESEM was consistent with the surface roughness of the two alloys.Conclusion The increased Ra values and decreased corrosion resistance are associated with the increased NaCl concentrations in Co-Cr al-loys.The corrosion resistance of LRF Co-Cr alloy was better than that of casting Co-Cr alloy at high chloride concentrations.
