An Indoor Experimantal Study on Rainfall Infiltration of Unsaturated Red-clay

Abstract: With typical red-clay in Jiangxi Province,China as the research object,by using rainfall simulation experimental equipment and penetration test device made by ECIT,this paper studied permeability of red-clay under heavy rainfall. Experimental results show that the permeability of red-clay decreases gradually with increasing initial moisture content. A macroscopic permeability coefficient formula is given to describe the power degrees of permeability with different initial moisture contents. Under the same condition of the moisture content,red-clay permeability increases with decreasing dry density,and permeability will present a sharp decline state when dry density increase to a certain degree,then moisture content of the same point between different dry density levels will no longer obvious. Cumulative rainfall time affects permeability of the red-clay significantly; the longer the rainfall duration is,the higher the deep soil moisture content will be. The infiltration progress will be continue when the rainfall stops,in this progress the surface moisture content decreases,and the moisture in the deep point of soil increases. The moisture content characteristic curve is tending to a vertical line.
