Abstract: When he was compiling Collected Poems of Eighteen Chinese Poets,Zeng Guofan was also composing, reading, and recommending to his family members poems of similar style with the works by the eighteen poetic geniuses. Zeng Guofan showed his discerning and aesthetic appreciation of Chinese poetry in this book, making it a classic. The collected poems were catalogued according to their style, and readers find it convenient as they find immediately the poems whose style they are interested in and eager to imitate. In this way this poem collection serves as a good model for learners to follow. Before the Collected Poems of Eighteen Chinese Poets,Zeng used to appreciate poems by dividing them into four types that featured respectively power, emotion, amusement, and insight. With the Collected Poems,Zeng added two more dimensions for poetry appreciation: " poetic form and meter",and " inspirational amusement",a combination of " inspiration" and " amusement". All these lead to a comprehensive and richly layered dimension of Zeng Guofan’s poetry criticism.
