Experimental Study on Bearing Capacity of a Novel Arch Bridge with FRP

Abstract: A system of flexible masonry arch bridge with the fiber reinforced polymer has been developed in this study and the related patent is awarded.The prefabricated degree and durability of the structure system has been improved greatly and the difficulty of construction is relatively low compared with the traditional masonry arch bridge.On the basis of preliminary study,in order to delay the separation between the arch block,the soffit has bonded by the high performance fiber reinforced polymer(FRP)cloth to improve the bearing capacity.To verify the effect of FRP on the structure of externally bonded material performance of the prefabricated arch bridge,the ultimate bearing capacity on two portable masonry arch bridge model is tested in study,including the arch axial line types,the stress of CFRP sheet on arch soffit and the bearing capacity of structure.The test results show that the bearing capacity has improved significantly compared with the early structure,the destruction pattern is cracking because of sliding of arch block after the CFRP sheet strips and the arch leg far from the loading is cracking.The bearing capacity of novel arch bridge is significantly larger than that provided by the traditional masonry arch construction through the calculation of finite element model with MIDAS civil.
