Preparation and properties of niobium-manganese composite electrode material

Abstract: A niobium-manganese composite electrode was obtained by preparation of niobium electrode with hydrothermal method followed by electrodeposition of manganese using nickel foam as substrate. The structure, morphology and composition of products on the electrode surface were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscope, scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive spectroscope, respectively. The electrochemical performances of niobium electrode and niobium-manganese composite electrode in 3 mol/L KOH solution were studied by cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impendence spectroscopy, constant-current charge-discharge test and charge-discharge cycling test. The results showed that a niobium-manganese composite electrode with excellent charge-discharge performance and cyclic stability can be successfully prepared by the hydrothermal synthesis-electrodeposition process. The specific capacitance of niobium-manganese composite electrode in 3 mol/L KOH solution reaches 330.64 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g, and remains at least 93% of the original value after 1000 charge-discharge cycles. Niobium-manganese composite electrode is more suitable to be used as the electrode of supercapacitor than niobium electrode.
