Abstract: Water security problems caused by persistent organic pollutants(POPs)increasingly attracted widespread attention. To better understand the pollution characteristics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)in lake surface sediment of Taihu Lake, surface sediments samples in drinking water sources in Taihu Lake Basin were chosen and the concentration distributions of the samples were analyzed. Two methods(characteristic compound and princi-pal component analysis)were used to identify the sources of the PAHs.The results showed that:The concentrations of 11 PAHs compounds detected ranged from 0to 280ng·g-1 and the average value was 114ng·g-1.Compared with other lakes,PAHs pollution of drinking water sources in Taihu Lake Basin was at a low level. The spectrum of PAHs showed that 4-ring and 5~6-ring PAHs were predominant, which accounted for 43.86%,50.88% of the total,respectively.2~3-ring PAHs accounted for only 5.26%.PAHs in surface sediments of drinking water sources in Taihu Lake Basin were mainly produced by fossil fuels(including gasoline, diesel fuel, coal, wood, etc.)of combustion, but maybe also by oil pollution. The results of the study can provide scientific reference for water pollution prevention and water resources management of Taihu Lake Basin.
