Abstract: All soils above the underground water level is the unsaturated soil, the mechanics proper-ties of unsaturated soil are very different with the saturated soil,so it is very necessary to study the effect of moisture content of soil on the shear strength. The influence of the matrix suction on shear strength of unsaturated clay is discussed by direct shear tests and SWCC. Experimental results show that there is a peak value of cohesion when water content reached 13%,and the internal friction an-gle increases as water content decreases. The influence law of matrix suction on the shear strength of unsaturated silty clay has been found out,by further comparison the relationship between the shear strength parameters and SWCC.
