Abstract: Development of poor quality water in agricultural irrigation is beneficial to relieve the increasingly serious water contradiction. To understand the suitability and safety of saline water irrigation in China, the effects of saline water irrigation on crops and the environment and the improvement measures are summarized in this paper. The analysis indicates that by controlling irrigation water salinity, formulating reasonable irrigation system and using the measures of underground drip irrigation and covering processing, saline water irrigation can ensure stable crop production, efficient use of water and the improvement of the product quality. It also can maintain the soil water-salt dynamic balance and avoid the deterioration of soil physical and chemical properties. The research also shows that appropriate extraction underground saline water will not significantly reduce the underground water level, while will help to improve the groundwater quality. Therefore, saline water irrigation has wide development space in China.
