Abstract: Sodium alginate is a natural polysaccharide polymer isolated from seaweeds or algae, which is an anionic linear polysaccharide composed of(1→4)-β-D-mannuronic acid and(1→4)-α-L-guluronic acid. Being biocompatible and biodegradable, nontoxic and easily available, it is widely used in microspheres, nanoparticles, pellets, matrix tablets, floating systems and liposome drug delivery system. This review presented the latest research of sodium alginate in the past few years and the trends of sodium alginate in the pharmaceutic preparation.
