Application of self-potential method to explore water in karst area

Abstract: The application of self-potential method to find water resource in the karst area on profile and depth exploration is discussed. Totally 85 nos. of wells are constructed in Guangxi from 2013 to 2015.Through data processing and analysis,considering the field geology and micro topography,the spatial distribution of groundwater seepage in all well location could be deduced. According to the statistical analysis of the measured data obtained by self-potential method for a large number of wells,the electrical profiling can be applied to the exploration of phreatic water and confined water in karst area; the electrical sounding can be applied to distinguish that the hole is dry,with water,or with muddy water etc; there is a corresponding relationship between the distance of M-N pole and the detecting depth H,i. e. MN / H≈1by self-potential sounding method within 150 m in depth. According to the comparison between the results of geophysical interpretation and the finding during well drilling,the interpretation results of the method are accurate. The method could be applied to future groundwater exploration,and provide a scientific basis for the well drilling design,the groundwater control in urban constructions.
