Abstract: Objective To study the significance of Calcitonin original and C reactive protein in the identification of the pathogen of severe pulmonary infection in the elderly. Methods 49 cases of elderly patients with the pathogen of severe pulmonary infection treated in our department from January 2012 to January 2015 were selected as the research object and divided into bacterial infection group of 27 cases, virus infection group of 12 cases and fungal infection group of 10 cases according to their etiology, PCT and CRP of the three groups were detected respectively. Results The positive rates of PCT and CRP in the bacterial infection group were significantly higher than these in the fungal infection group and virus infection group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05); PCT content in the bacterial infection group was significantly higher than that in the fungal infection group and virus infection group, and the difference was statistically significant(P<0.05);C- reactive protein content of the three groups was not obviously different(P>0.05), and there was no statistically significance. Conclusion Pulmonary infection of PCT and CRP were elevated, ascending range of serum PCT was different in different infection types and the difference of CRP content was not obvious. PTC identification of pulmonary infection pathogen is more advantageous than CRP.
