Abstract: According to the practice of English translation of A Study of Shamanism of China’s Northern Minorities, the paper discusses the interaction among the cognitive view, countermeasure view and methodology of translation of shamanism’s indigenous concepts. It holds that its translation is restrained by the non-linguistic contexts and should follow the principle of thick translation. Hence the foreignization as a translation strategy of translating indigenous concepts is proposed to provide the referential measures and methods for the translation of religious texts and works, expecting that the translated texts display the real communication values and exert their effective social functions.
