Inhibitory Effect of Oral Administration of Strontium Ranelate and Bovine Collagen Peptide on Bone Loss in Tail Suspended Rats

Abstract: objective To study inhibitory effect of oral administration of strontium ranelate( SR) and bovine collagen peptide( CP) on bone loss in tail suspended rats. Methods Twenty-four male Sprague Dawley( SD) rats were divided into 3 groups: normal control group( CN),tail supended group( TS),TS and once-daily intragastric administration of 750 mg / kg group( SR&CP),the experimental period was 28 d. Serum samples were analyzed for alkaline phosphatase( ALP) using an autoanalyzer; osteocalcin( OC) using radioimmunometric assay; the right femurs were analyzed for microstructure by micro CT; collagen fibers of tibia by masson staining and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry( DXA) was used to measure bone mineral density( BMD) of femur.Results TS rats supplemented with SR&CP showed osteoprotective effects: significant inhibition in reductions of their serum ALP and OC levels and femoral BMD,as well as improvement the microarchitecture of their femurs. Conclusions Oral administration SRCP can significantly inhibit bone loss of TS rats and provide theoretical basis for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis under microgravity.
