Novel Dynamic Sealing Technique for Dry Screw Vacuum Pump

Abstract: A novel technique was developed to mechanically seal the dry screw vacuum pump at the end near the pump’s vent.The original work included the two sealing rings,separated by sealing fluid:one is the rotating ring with flat surface,and the other is a stationary ring with a well- defined array of circular holes,a few tens of microns in radius and depth.The impact of the sealing situation,including but not limited to the depth/radius ratio of hole,density of hole,properties of sealing fluid,on the friction torque,friction power loss,and leakage rate was mathematically modeled,theoretically analyzed on the basis of fluid dynamics and numerically simulated.The calculated results show that the newly-developed,optimized mechanical sealing technique outperforms the conventional one because of lower friction power loss,smaller leakage rate and much higher wear resistance.We suggest that the novel mechanical seal for the dry screw vacuum pump be of some technological interest in industrial applications.
