Preliminary Study on Production of Ti and Ti-Alloys by Vacuum Aluminothermic Reduction

Abstract: The reduction of Na2TiF6 with Al in vacuum was mathematically modeled,theoretically calculated in thermodynamics,and experimentally evaluated.The influence of the reduction conditions,including but not limited to the reduction temperature,mole ratio of Na2 TiF6,Al and NaF powders,and pressure,on the contents of the Ti-alloy and byproduct was investigated by calculating the Gibbs free-energy,and by measurement with X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy(XRF).The preliminary results show that it is feasible to produce Ti and Ti-Al alloy on industrial scale by vacuum aluminothemiic reduction of Na2 TiF6 at 600℃.In addition,we found that in vacuum,the Ti and Ti-Al alloys can be completely separated from the main by-product Na3 AlF6,one of the major raw materials in Al electrolysis industry.
