Abstract: The plasma discharge of the solar array induced by the hypervelocity impact of space debrisin low earth orbit(LEO) via ground simulation.The lab-built experimental setup mainly includes the solar array on substrate of 2A12 aluminum alloy,power supply,projectile emission unit,discharge measurement unit,plasma diagnosis probe,and units for automatic control,data acquisition and data analysis.The influence of the plasma discharge conditions,including but not limited to the pressure,incident angle and velocity of projectiles,power supply voltage,on the plasma discharge characteristics and collision damages were investigated.The results show that when it comes to the plasma discharge occurring at an incident angle of 60° and at a voltage of 100 V,the critical impact velocity is estimated to be in the range of 2.4 ~ 2.6km/s.To be specific,an impact velocity above 2.4 and/or 2.6 km/s resulted in a significant plasma discharge of the solar array.
