Abstract: Objective To analyze the clinical characteristics and curative effects of vertebral osteomyelitis caused by Gram-negative bacteria. Methods From January 2006 to January 2014, a total of 70 patients diagnosed with vertebral osteomyelitis were reviewed, retrospectively. Results Among the 70 cases, patients with Gram-negative bacteria infection were 21 (30%) cases. Compared with patients with Staphylococcus aureus infection, they were more likely to be female (χ2= 4.48,P < 0.05) and complicated with diabetes (χ2= 3.94,P < 0.05), but more likely to had epidural or paravertebral edema (χ2= 7.60,P < 0.01), easily to recurrent (χ2= 4.14,P < 0.05).Conclusions Soft tissue edema is radiological presentation of Gram-negative vertebral osteomyelitis. Antibiotic therapy must to be more than 6-8 weeks.
