Industrial duckweed-based bioethanol fermentation: life-cycle energy and economy study

Abstract: In this paper,dynamic mass and energy balanced simulation and economic calculation has been proposed to evaluate industrial application prospect for technology that ethanol produced by duckweed fermentation based on life-cycle framework. High-starch duckweed strains were screened and physiologically analyzed. Reaction parameters in fermentation processes were estimated through previously study as well as literatures related. Superpro Designer simulation of annual output 150 000 t biorefinery plant established results showed that ethanol was produced from dry duckweed(35.7%starch content) in a yield on theoretical value(146.7±10 mg/g) of 63.74%, with energy output- input ratio of 2.10 and 4.79-year payback period of investment. Ethanol fuel cost from duckweed was slightly lower than corn, roughly the same with cassava, and had proved obvious advantage in energy efficiency compared with other ethanol raw materials
