Abstract: Based on demand perspective, this paper has analyzed rural households’ credit behavior and possible reasons using survey data of six provinces in China.According to the results, informal channels are still main choices of rural households having credit demand in general which there is obvious funding shortage and credit constraints in rural China. However, the role of formal channels is growing in developed regions and rural households with better economic conditions.Due to restrictions of rural households’ ability and being lack of necessary investment opportunities, the credit usage is mainly living expenditure. At the same time, the importance of productive credit is tending to growing. This is mainly contributed by wide usage of new species and technologies and diversity of nonagricultural employment opportunities. At last,short-term and interest-free credit are still main forms of rural households’ credit behavior.Interest-bearing credit is becoming more frequent when it is from informal credit channels. As deepening of marketing process, rural households’ preferences are changing from relationship type to contract type slowly.
