Abstract: Relying on published and unpublished materials, this paper traces unknow n debate betw een Pound and Zhang Junmai( Carsun Chang) in the early 1950 s. Pound w anted Confucianism "as Confucius had it,"and had little interest in"later dilatations,"w hereas Zhang,a leading present-day neo-Confucian,w as opposed to a "hackneyed exposition of the basic thought of Confucius,"w hat he called a"museum approach. "Despite their disagreement, the tw o men held each other in esteem, and ideas introduced by Zhang, both from traditional Confucian w orks and from "later dilatations,"w ent into Pound’s cantos of the mid- 1950 s. In the late 1950 s,surprisingly,Pound opened himself to Kangxi and Yongzheng’s Confucian "Sacred Edict,"w hich he w ould not have used w ithout years of interactions w ith Zhang.
