Abstract: Scaffolds composed of three perpendicular poles(SCTPP)have obvious protection effect for the riverbank scour.Based on the variable slope flume test, the paper studies the influence of the approaching velocity, the flow depth, the scour time and the layout density on the protection effect of SCTPP for the local scour at piers. And then it analyzes the protection characteristics and the optimal design protection scope of SCTPP for the local scour at piers. The results show that the equilibrium scour depth at piers increases with the increase of the approaching velocity and flow depth when the layout density is same, and increasing the layout density can effectively reduce the equilibrium scour depth at piers when the flow condition does not change. When the volume rate of poles of SCTPP is greater than 0.229,the changes of flow condition and layout density can not affect the protection effect.SCTPP can make the process of the scour slow down, and the scour time increases more than 3.28 times than that without SCTPP.The optimal design protection scope of SCTPP can be chosen between the maximum scour scope with the different layout density and the 2.8times pier diameter.
