Dependence of Open Resonator Performance on Surface-Mating of Hemispherical Resonator and Phase-Front of Gaussian Beam

Abstract: The influence of the mating-surface of hemispherical resonator( HR) and the phase-front of a Gaussian beam on the characteristics of an open resonator,including but not limited to the resonant frequency,Qfactor,and mode interval,was empirically approximated,mathematically modeled,theoretically analyzed in scalar theory of Gaussian beam,and numerically simulated with software Ansys HFSS. Besides,two prototyped hemispherical resonators with different radiuses were manufactured and cold tested. The calculated and simulated results show that the surface-mating,of both the hemispherical resonator and the phase-front of Gaussian beam,has a major impact on the open resonator’s characteristics. For example,a better surface-mating results in a much higher Q-factor,a more symmetrical resonant curve and a much smaller mode interval. The calculated,simulated and tested results were found to be in good agreement.
