Abstract: Objective To explore the efficacy and safety of sodium nitroprusside in the treatment of hypertensive emergency. Methods A total of 140 patients with hypertensive emergency was equally assigned into two groups. The hypertensive emergency in group A was treated with sodium nitroprusside started in a dose of 0.25μg·kg-1·min-1 and that in group B with nitroglycerin started in a doses of 5-10μg·kg-1· min-1.The efficacy of blood pressure reduction and related adverse effects were compared between two groups. Results The efficacy was satisfactory in the control of hypertensive emergency with an overall effectiveness rate of 100% in both groups. The heart rate during treatment was lower in group A than that in group B[(85.94±12.76)beats/min vs.(89.21±13.79)beats/min](P<0.05).Conclusion Sodium nitroprusside is effective and safe in the treatment of patients with hypertensive emergency.
