Abstract: Defensins constitute the largest group of host defence peptides in the body of animals during the entire course of evolution. These cysteine- rich cationic peptides have a broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, and can effectively kill bacteria, yeast, viruses, and other microorganisms. Therefore, defensins are a major component of innate immunity in the organisms. The functions of defensins in immunomodulation have been widely investigated. This article reviews the latest advances in the immunomodulatory activity of β- defensins as well as the role of β- defensins in the process of infection and inflammation.
