Abstract: An optimized hybrid excitation synchronous machine(HESM) with magnetic shunting rotor and brushless field excitation is proposed and flux density distribution is discussed. Armature reaction field and inductance feature of the machine is investigated in comparison with that of permanent magnet synchronous machine(PMSM). It is shown that introduction of excitation winding and magnetic shunting structure has significant effect on armature reaction field of the machine. Inductance feature is determined by the saturation of both axial and radial flux path which vary with field current and armature current. And on this basis, influence of inductance feature on motoring operation is analyzed and the risk of irreversible demagnetization of the magnets is estimated. A novel topology is presented and compared to search the influence of structure variation on inductance feature of the HESM. A 24 k W prototype is developed, and the 3D finite element analysis(FEA) results in accordance with measured results validate the inductance variation of the HESM.
