Research on the Response Characteristics of BESS Used in Power Smoothing

Abstract: The power response speed of battery energy storage system(BESS) there has been some controversy. Some scholars think that the response time of BESS mainly depends on the converter. The response is quickly. But some scholars think that the response time of BESS mainly depends on the battery itself. The response is slow. Aiming at this problem, BESS power response characteristics are studied in this article through studying the operation characteristic f the battery itself and the converter power regulation scope. Theory and simulation analysis show that the power response may cannot follow the demand quickly only when the output power of BESS is high. This is because the terminal voltage of battery will falling fast when the output current is high. This limits the battery and inverter output power ability. Increase the battery capacity, reduce the battery internal resistance and increase the voltage maintain ability of the battery, improvement of the nominal voltage of the battery through optimization the group way, etc., can improve the power response characteristics of BESS, and increase the ability of provide high power.
