Abstract: Hematite silica red pigments were prepared via a solid state approach and a high energy ball milling technique using laterite and iron oxide as raw materials with a small amount of additional mineralizer. Effects of various high energy ball milling activation times on the coloration of the pigments were investigated. The chemical compositions of laterite were analysed. The results showed that Si O2, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 are the major chemical compositions of laterite from Jingdezhen area in addition to small amount of K2 O, Na2 O and Ti O2. High energy ball milling technique can greatly facilitate the color generation of hematite silica red pigments. Pigments present optimum coloration with laterite 93.7%, iron oxide 6.3% and additional 3% of borax and 15 h-high–energy–ball-milling activation. The chromatic values are: L*=38.21, a*=21.24, b*=11.87.
