Abstract: Adhesive failure of epoxy-glass joints in aqueous environments has been investigated by plane-strain tests. The tests were carried out both before and after immersion of the specimens in water, using different kinds of silane coupling agent at different concentrations as well as for different times.Using the generalized fracture mechanics theory, interracial energy has been separated from the total failure energy and decreases with the time of immersion according to a first-order chemical reaction in spite of varying silane coupling agents and concentrations. The dry binding energy is approximately fourteen times the Van der Waals interaction energy, suggesting that at least some of the bonds are primary.
