Abstract: In-vitro activity of Chinese-made ceftriaxone was determined in comparison with other six cephalosporins(imported ceftriaxone cefotaxime, desacetylcefotaxime, cefoperazone, ceftizoxime and ceftazidime)and gentamicin against 836 aerobes and 53 anaerobes. Ceftriaxone was highly active against Streptococcus pneumoniae, alpha- and beta-haemolytic streptococci(MIC≤0.06mg/L), but had no activity against most strains of enterococci. The MIC90 for enzyme-negative and enzyme-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus were 4 and 16 mg/Lrespectively.Ceftriaxone was just as active as the other cephalosporins tested except desacetylcefotaxime against Haemophilus influenzae and most strains of Enterobacteriaecae(MIC90≤0.06-0.5mg/L).Ceftriaxone was only slightly active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, being less active than ceftazidime and cefoperozone.Ceftriaxone showed relatively poor activity against Acinetobacter anitratus, Alcaligenes faecalis and Bcteroides fragilis.However,Gram-positive anaerobic cocci were susceptible to this compound. Overall,201 out of 285 strains of gentamicin-resistant Gram-negative bacilli were still susceptible to ceftriaxone. No difference between the imported and the Chinese-made ceftriaxone in their in-vitro activity was observed.
