Abstract: It is very important to make a clear understanding on the susceptibility of Staph aureus, a common clinical pathogen, to common antibiotics in order to rationally use these drugs in the chemotherapy and to control the infections caused by Staph aureus. In this study 16 common beta-lactam antibiotics were compared with their MIC ranges, MIC 50, MIC 90, MIC mode, and MICGM , and the Inhibitory index 50 (I 50) was applied to show the differences among the same series with relatively objective evalution.Among the penicillins, oxacillin and cloxacillin showed the strongest antibacterial activities with their same values of MIC50 (0.25mg/L) and MIC90(0.5mg/L) against Staph aureus, but the value of I50 of cloxacillin(0.20mg/L)was lower than that of oxacillin (0.23mg/L), which demonstrated a better antibacterial activity in favour of cloxacillin. Ampicillin had a same effect against Staphylococcus spieces compared with penicillin G, but the therapeutic effect of the latter might not be satisfactory due to its lower serum concentration vs ampicillin. The antibacterial activities of ureido-penicillins showed various degrees againsit Staphylococcus in the order (from the strong to the weak) of furbenicillin, mezlocillin, azlocillin and piperacillin. This might remindes us that if in the treatment of multi-infections, furbenicillin should be under the consideration in the therapy.Carbenicillin showed its worst activity against Staphylococcus sp.Among the cephalosporins, the 1st generation cephalosporin, cephalothin and cefazolin, enjoyed their super activities against Staphylococcus sp. compared with the 2nd and 3rd generations. We found that the stronger the activity against Gram-negative, the weaker the activity against Staphylococcus sp.In the treatment of staphylocccus infections, due to the side-effects of beta-lac-tams, patients may be suggested to use amikacin or gentamicin which also possess a good activity against Staphylococcus aureus.
