Abstract: It has been known that the primary pathway of ammonia assimilation in bacteiia varies not only with microorganisms, but also changes with the quality and concentration of the nitrogen source supplied. We have reported in previous paper that in Nocardia mediterranei U-32 nitrogen was mainly assimilated through the pathways of glutamine synthetase (GS) and the alanine dehydroge-nase (ADH) when grown on ammonium sul-fate as sole source of nitrogen. In a synthetic medium, the predominance of the two pathways were regulated by the concentration of ammonia; and a correlation was demonstrated between the GS activity and rifamy-cin SV biosynthesis. On this basis,We further studied the pathways of ammonia assimilation in Nocardia mediterranei U-32 gro-wn on proline, potassium nitrate, alanine, glutamate, urea and glutamine as sole nitrogen source respectively. The results obtained from experiments reported in this paper show that both the specific activities of GS and ADH in Nocardia mediterronei U-32 changed with the nitrogen source, but the ratio between the activities of GS and of ADH was found to give a better correlation to rifamycin SV biosynthesis than the earlier reported GS activity alone.
