AN EXAMPLE OF SEMICONTINUOUS FERMENTATION FOR PENICILLIN PRODUCTION

Abstract: By using pelleting microorganism, a se-micontinuous penicillin fermentation experiments were carried out in a 550 litres fer-mentor to test and verify the thory of"fed batch culture"proposed previously. Since the specific rate of penicillin production and the volume of culture are variable both in the process of fed batch and in semicontinuousfermentation,a production rate which can be considered as a constant was introduced.The result showed that the production rate of the semicontinuous process was quite stable throughout the cycle, and the final cumulated penicillin yields were about 26% higher than that in fed batch process.
