From image costume to symbolic costume: Women’s wear in “Dianshizhai pictorial”

Abstract: "Dianshizhai pictorial" was the most influential modern Chinese lithography pictorial. In this paper, we focus on western women’s wear in "Dianshizhai pictorial", using the concept of costume s three levels : physical costume, image costume and symbolic costume. This article is divided into four parts: Firstly, physical costume: the historical development of western women’s wear at the end of the 19 th century;Secondly, image costume: through comparing paintings, photos at the same period, to summarize the special image language of describing western women’s wear in. Thirdly, special technique of expressing western women’s wear in "Dianshizhai pictorial"; Fourthly, symbolic costumes: Although the western women’s wear was misread, it reflected the concern of the Chinese masses to western women in the late Qing Dynasty. Furthermore,the Western women s wear in "Dianshizhai pictorial" inspired Chinese women’s cognition to dress, and to some extent, played the role of teaching Chinese women how to dress in the late Qing Dyansty.
