Abstract: Clark’s The Painting of Modern Life is the classical work of social history of art. It gives a semiological interpretation and more meanings to the orthodox Marxist concepts of class and ideology, which connects them with Debord’s notion of spectacle. The work makes the two concepts be the key words of the study on impressionism painting. The representation and reconstruction of class are found in every details of classical works of impressionism painting. Thus Clark’s The Painting of Modern Life is more a work on iconology of class than on social history of art.
