THE DISTRIBUTION OF THE SUBSTANCE K-LIKE IMMUNOREACTIVITY IN HUMAN SPINAL CORD

Abstract: The distribution of substance k-like immunoreactivity (SKLI) in human spinal cord was studied with the method of immunohistochemistry (Avidin Biotinperoxidase Complex). The results showed that SKLI was located in the posterior horn (from lamina I to VI) and Lissauer’s tract and lamina X of every segment of the spinal cord. The density of SKLI in lamina II was higher than that in any other regions of the posterior horn. The relative density and intensity of SKLI were summarized as follows: sacral>lumbar>cervical>thoracic, but the density of SKLI in the enlargement of the cervical segments is much higher than any other cervical segments. No SKLI was found in the ventral horn. It was also discussed that substance k may act as a neurotransmitter in nervous system.
