Deliberation on Improving Axle Guiding Design and Stiffness for Existing Electric Locomotives

Abstract: This paper provides the method for calculating the axle guiding stiffness acted by resilient axle box guide bars, the accuracy of which has been verified by practical test results. In order to decrease the transverse wheel/rail dynamic force, the author thought it is necessary to select an optimum and possibly minimum transverse guiding stiffness for axle according to the requests of hunting stability at maximum running speed of locomotive and hence proposes two new axle guiding designs which are feasible for the existing electric locomotives and the developing higher speed locomotives respectively, the guiding stiffness of which has been verified by the method described herein.
