A NOTE ON THE NON-UNIQUENESS OF UMKEHR METHOD B

Abstract: In this paper Wei’s work (Acta Geophysica Sinica, Vol. 11, No. 2, 123—134, 1962) is discussed. Taking into account the jump-rising of the effective height h_E defined by Wei, the physical mechanism of the Umkehr effect is discussed in detail. It is concluded that the jump-rising of h_E does not affect the calculated ozone distribution in the Umkehr method B, and that the non-uniqueness of the fine structure of the calculated ozone distribution by this method is due to the existence of experimental errors. Moreover, the influence of experimental errors in method B may be reduced if different values of the maximum difference △N in values of N between the observation and calculation are adopted for different zenith angles, and/or a certain type of distribution is assumed for a fixed height interval as done in Umkehr method A.
