Fatigue crack growth behavior in friction stir welded structural joints

Abstract: In order to get lighter w eight,low er cost and better mechanical performance in the aircraft design the Friction Stir Welding( FSW) technique has been used by many researchers due to the advantages of good fatigue performance and manufacture ability. The recent research show s that the FSW fuselage longitude joints have more benefits on w eight and cost savings. In this thesis,fatigue crack propagation behavior in FSW joints specimens is studied. Through the numerical calculation and the fatigue experiments for the tw o kinds of specimens,the results show s these tw o kind of skin panel have their ow n advantages and disadvantages. The results w ill help the designer to have a more reasonable choice in aircraft design.
