Abstract: From the knowledge of the theory of plates and shells, a redundant moment and a redundant shear force are required to be added on both edges of the circular plate and cylindrical shell when they are connected together, so that the compatibility of deformation can be satisfied. However, the calculation is tedious. In the paper, the finding that the magnitudes of the redundant moment and the redundant force are depend on two nondimensionalized parameters, namely λ= h/dt 1/2 and η=t/d, is reported. Based on the finding, a simplified method for calculating them with accuracy satisfying practical engineering applications is proposed.
