Numerical Simulation of Deep Confined Aquifer and Surrounding Formation Settlement induced by Dewatering in Foundation Pits

Abstract: This paper studied the problem of deep confined aquifer in construction of foundation pits with soft soil areas,in order to obtain the lawof formations settlement induced by dewatering.Taking the metro junction hub in Shanghai as an engineering example,based on laws of water level distribution in different soil layers and the FEM software Geo Studio2007,a simulation of deep confined aquifer after dewatering was carried out. The water level distribution in confined aquifer and the lawfor settlement of surrounding soils were obtained and compared with situ data. Results indicate that whether or not the compressing deformation in overlaying soil of the confined aquifer layer occurs,it largely depends on the permeability of neighboring soil layer. Surface sedimentation values of the retaining structure present mutations; it means that the retaining structure in foundation pits can offer protection against the surface settlement. Conclusion is that the retaining struc-ture of adjacent excavation is in favor of convergence for surface settlement,which can make a control of formation sedimentation. Further more,surface settlements between adjacent foundation pits present linear variation.
