Abstract: In the case of ischemia, tissues and cells are often in hypoxic condition. Hypoxia of tissues and cells can promote transcription and activation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1(HIF-1). HIF-1 can activate hundreds of target genes of its downstream and trigger a series of mutually synergistic angiogenic responses. In this review, we will describe biological characteristics of HIF-1, the key role of HIF-1in the regulation of angiogenesis, and HIF-1-related vascular disease.
