The Implication of Water Imagery in Nie Hualing’s Works

Abstract: Nie Hualing,with the experience of living in Mainland China,Taiwan and the United States,was a brilliant star in Chinese literature in the 20 th century,whose works enjoyed a high reputation in oversees literature for her rich life experience and profound insights on life.Nie Hualing grew up in Yangtze valley and almost spent her whole life floating on the water,thus water was the witness of her spiritual journey.The water imagery in her works expresses her mixed emotional experience with great aesthetic significance.This paper discussed the categories of water imagery in terms of the following five themes;individual life,identity,life circumstances,aesthetic style and female experience,and explored the possible causes of water imagery taking Nie’s humanistic concern and family-country collective consciousness into consideration.
