Abstract: The treatment for renal stone disease has changed dramatically in recent years with improvements and miniaturization of instruments.Currently, retrograde intrarenal surgery(RIRS)has become one of the main modalities for management of upper urinary stone disease.RIRS is generally advantageous in the management of moderate size renal stones(1-2cm)with high stone-free rates and low complication rates. However, there remain several controversial issues in the clinical application of RIRS,such as operation indication, stent placement before RIRS,dilatation methods of narrow ureter, optimal power settings for Holmium∶YAG lithotripsy and current status of RIRS for management of nephrolithiasis in children. In this review article,we want to discuss several controversial issues related to the clinical application of RIRS.
