Method of Second-Order Ripple Power Suppression for Battery in Cascaded H-Bridge Storage System

Abstract: Cascaded H-bridge converter is suitable for battery energy storage system. However,as a sort of single-phase converter, its essence determines that second-order ripple power will exist in the DC bus when power exchanging between battery and the power grid, which will be harm to battery life. In order to restrain the second-order ripple power of traditional cascaded H-bridge converter, a bi-directional Buck/Boost converter is added between battery and cascaded H-bridge converter, which forms two-stage cascaded H-bridge converter. This article compares and analyses the second-order ripple power of traditional and two-stage cascaded H-bridge converter at the battery and then proposes the control strategy. By controlling the ripple voltage of the middle capacitor, the ripple power at the battery side will be buffered. Simulation and experimental results verify the feasibility of the theory.
