Between Story and Telling——New Interpretation of Artemisia Gentileschi of Feminist Art History

Abstract: Artemisia Gentileschi is a legendary controversial female artist with a fondness for representing subject matters of sex, violence and death. Traditional art history relates her personal experience with her art in a relatively simple way, seeing her radical subjects as a biographic reflection of her adolescent experiences of sexual harassment. However, feminist studies of art history that grew up during 1970 s have been re-visioning artworks by Artemisia Gentileschi with theoretical perspectives in new art history, developing conclusions of more rational significance. This paper will focus on discussing three masterpieces of Artemisia: Susanna and Elders(1610), Judith Slaying Holofernes(1612~1613) as well as Cleopatra(1621~1622). Through the interpretations of feminist art history methodology of Artemisia’s paintings, the space of meaning of Artemisia within the frame of new art history shall be reconstructed.
